Pendeli Monastery

The Pendeli Monastery is located on Mount Pendeli, which is a smaller mountain than Parnitha but still green and with many springs.

During the Christian period many monasteries were built on the Pendeli mountain. The most famous was the Monastery of Tao Pantokrator Savious Jesus Christ, built in the 12th century by Nikolaos Kamatiros.

Later the Pendeli Monastery was built under the auspices of the Archdiocese of Athens. The monastery was founded in 1578 by Archbishop Timotheos.

The Pendeli Monastery is one of the richest and largest currently functioning monasteries in Greece. It played a crucial role in promoting a spiritual life during the Ottoman rule. It is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

A visitor can also visit the "Krifo Sholio", the secret (hiding) school, which was the school which preserved the Greek language during the Ottoman rule, by using liturgical texts and hymns.
