Mosaic in Queens Crescent

Driving around North London, I came across this fascinating work of art, located in Queens Crescent. The specific mosaic is on the wall of the Caraf Centre, which is an African Community Centre. This endeavour was undertaken by Rachel Silver, who was commissioned by Groundwork North London, in order to work with the centre on a series of designs for a mosaic mural on the outside of the centre wall.

The youngsters who use the centre travelled to Gambia, bringing back images that inspired the work. The beautiful theme here is a depiction of a gradual blend from night to day, describing typically African symbols and images of masks, textiles, costumes, instruments and vegetation, fruits and animals.
