The Runner Glass Statue, Athens

The Runner, known in Greek as Dromeas, is a statue found in the centre of the Greek capital. It is a tall statue, standing 12 metres high. It was created by Athens sculptor Costas Varitsos in 1994. It was originally placed in Omonia Square, but had to be moved hen construction of the new Metro system commenced. Its unique feature is the fact that it is made of countless of layers of glass, showing a dynamic movement.

  1. I think you may have your date of 1994 wrong. The glass statue is mentioned and shown in a photograph in the 1991 edition of the Insight City Guide Athens by Elizabeth Boleman Herring.

    1. That's correct, I saw it (finished) in Omonoia Square in 1991.

  2. The Runner, sculptured by Kostas Varotsos, is made of glass and was originally erected in Omonia Suare in 1988. In 1994 it was moved to the Square of the "Great School of the Nation", opposite the Hilton Hotel because the central square of the city was being remodeled for the 2004 Olympics.
