St Nicholas Church, Egina

One of the attractions on the small Greek Island of Egina, about an hour boat trip away from Athens, is the small Church of St. Nicholas located at the port. St Nicholas is famous for being the protector of sailors, and therefore is the perfect saint to have at the port.

This small Church was built in the 17th century, whilst following the Byzantine style Church, especially the one found in the Aegean Islands, i.e. white exterior with blue features (on the windows, doors and crosses). It is a place where travellers can find comfort before boarding the ship, lighting a candle to St Nicholas for a safe journey.
