The City of Zakynthos

Zakynthos, Zante, known also as the ‘Levant flower’ is located at the foot of Bochali Hill and is the capital and main port of the Greek island, located in the Ionian Sea – between Greece and Italy.

The earthquake of 1953 literally demolished the town and only three buildings survived. Today it is a modern city with a rapidly development that extends more and more toward the interior of the island. Zante has many interests, such as the famous church of St. Dionysius, which enshrines the relics of the saint, the numerous museums and characteristic squares of Dionysios Solomos and St. Mark's, dating from the period of Venetian Rule including the unique Catholic Church on the island.

Much interest has the small neighbourhood around the ruins of the old Venetian castle, located on Bochali. Here the small and silent streets, the old houses with flowering gardens and the magnificent view overlooking the entire bay of Zante town transfer visitors to former glorious epochs.
