Working Horses – Royal Mail First Day Cover

The new Royal Mail First Day Cover stamps dedicate their last stamps to the ‘Working Horse’, which has been making a significant contribution to life and labour in human culture for more than 6000 years. The herd nature of horses has made them sociable and trainable, while being sensitive and intelligent too – all important qualities for a working companion. As well as being capable of travelling at speed, horses can pull and carry loads that no human can manage, while their stamina enables long journeys. Once free to roam like many of the people who first tamed them, horses quickly became widely domesticated. For trade, exploration, communication and even conflict, they made it possible to travel further, work harder and achieve more. In human history, the horse is rarely far from the main events, no matter what the culture, time or situation.
