The Holy Scriptures Belong to the Church

Many, during all epochs, wish to explain the Holy Scriptures as they fit, whether they are in the Church or outside it. Today, we can identify that atheists and non-Christians wish to explain the Scriptures without understanding its deeper meaning, without the gift of faith. Fr. Tertullian’s attitude to the Scriptures was typical. He was not prepared to discuss the controversial topics of the faith with heretics on the Scriptural ground. Scriptures belonged to the Church. Heretics’ appeal to them was unlawful. They had no right on foreign property. Such was his main argument in the famous treatise: De praesciptione haereticorum. An unbeliever has no access to the message, simply because he does not “receive” it. For him there is no “message” in the Bible”. (p. 18-19).
