The Church of the Life-Giving Spring, Lesvos

The Church of the Life-Giving Spring (Zoodohou Pigis) on the island of Lesvos is located near the Church of the Virgin Mary of Ayiassos[1]. This is the place that Blessed Agathon of Ephesus chose to conserve, in his smallskete, the Sacred Icon of Virgin Mary ‘Saint Sion’ and the other sacred relics that he brought from Jerusalem in 803 AD.

This small and beautiful Church building had been repaired several times through the years. Nevertheless, it was in 1997 that its complete renovation began. The whole project commenced with a group of women who wanted to replace the icon screen. It was then that Virgin Mary appeared to Euterpe Hiotelli, now deceased, and urged her to see, together with Mrs Ariadne Psyllou, that the Church of the Life-Giving Spring was restored as well, so that the Chapel of Blessed Agathon of Ephesus and the Church take their current appearance. Many other Christians contributed to this effort. Additionally, many other Christians contributed to this significant effort.

This project was completed on August 12th 2001. This resulted in the existence of two Churches, the Church of the Life-Giving Spring and the Church of St Agathon; therefore, today we see two icon screens, with two Holy Tables. This new Church was inaugurated by Patriarch of Alexandria, Petros, and the Metropolitan of Mytilene, Iakovos.
