Many have endeavoured to
understand and explain the notion of Tradition according to the belief of the
Orthodox Church. Orthodoxy does not only believe and maintain the Bible, but it
also believes in the Holy Tradition, which is the unwritten heritage passed
down to us from the Apostles and the life of the Church. There are countless
definitions of what Tradition is. Here Fr. George Florovski explains that:
“Tradition is the witness of the
Holy Spirit, His unceasing revelation and preaching of Good Tidings. For the
living members of the Church it is not an outwards historical authority but the
eternal continual voice of God, not only the voice of the past but the voice of
eternity”. (The Church of God, p.
64).
