I have heard over the years, ‘How
can we call God our Father? Does this mean that Jesus is our brother?’ However,
this privilege was given to mankind by Jesus Christ, who gave us the ‘Our
Fathers’ prayer, claiming: “This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in
heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth
as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as
we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver
us from the evil one” (Matthew 6: 9-13).
The above prayer emphasises the fact
that we are His children, brothers and sisters among ourselves, and thus we
ought to love each other. We should always have our minds fixed towards heaven,
not on earth; otherwise we are not worthy to call God ‘our Father in heaven’.
