Being Orthodox and living in the
West, in a non-Orthodox country (Great Britain), we come across the troubling
issue of the celebration of Easter. I use the word troubling because many
Orthodox who work, go to University, have exams etc. during the Orthodox
Easter, haven’t got the opportunity to go to Church to most, if not all, of the
services during Holy Week. This is not an issue for the Orthodox in the East.
However, many do ask why we celebrate Easter on a different date than that of
the West. This is probably a topic which should be looked at by all Orthodox.
This is a massive issue, which will be analysed here in another occasion;
however, it’s interesting to identify that in the 21st century the
Orthodox and the Western Easter will coincide 31 times. However, after 2099
both East and West will celebrate Easter on the same date after 801 years in
2900 AD.
