Palm Sunday is one of the most
important days within the ecclesiastical calendar of the Orthodox Church. This
day celebrates the entrance of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, and inevitably his
entrance towards his Passion, Crucifixion and Resurrection. A characteristic
tradition of this day is the adornment of the Church with countless small
crosses made by palm leaves. These are blessed and then given to the faithful,
who then take them home and keep them as a blessing. According to other
traditions, olive leaves are also used; this tradition is mainly to be found in
Cyprus. Nevertheless, we maintain the palm leaves traditions, since they were
used by the people of Jerusalem when Jesus entered the city.
