One of the central squares in
Chalkida, the capital city of Euboea (the second largest island in Greece), is
called Immortals Square (Πλατεία Αθανάτων).
This name was given to the square in 1928 when a dedication was made to the
heroes of the island. This, however, was later moved in 1950. Today a number of
statues adorn this square, including the great local composer Nikolaos
Skalkotas, Metropolitan of Chalkida Gregorios Pleiathos, Colonel Mordoheos
Frizis who was killed for his country and Deputy Commander Dimitrios G.
Misiris.
