Dark Castle Church, Cappadocia

The Dark Castle Church, in Ihlara Valley, Cappadocia, is actually not a castle. It was given this name due to its dark colour and the fact that it is carved into a high rock mass, looking more like a castle than a church. The ceiling of the big hall is decorated with a cross and a number of other reliefs, whilst also having horse shoe arched niches on the walls. In contrast to the other Churches in Ihlara Valley, this Church does not have any frescoes. The Dark Castle Church dates between the 9th and 11th centuries AD.
