The Peloponnesian Association of
Great Britain together with the Ladies Auxiliary Committee St Agatha organised
a great event at the Greek Orthodox Church of St Panteleimon (Harrow – London),
which was part of the Celebrations of the Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great
Britain for the Three Hierarchs and the Greek and Christian Letters.
The evening began with the
cutting of the Vasilopita (New Year Cake or St Basil’s Cake),[1]
by both Fr Anastasios Salapatas and Fr Joseph Paliouras. The main part of the
event was a talk given by the Consular General of Greece in London, Mr Sotirios
Demestichas, who spoke on the topic: ‘Georgios Seferis: Diplomat and Poet.’ The
speaker was introduced by the President of the Committee of the Peloponnesian
Association of GB, Dr Lena Markou.
Many people attended this great
event, including the Education Coordinator of the Greek Embassy in London Dr
George Kossivas, the President of the Association of Greek Orthodox Communities
in Great Britain Mr Marios Minaidis, members of other organisations, clergy,
teachers, artists and many more.
The Consular General presented
Seferis in a great manner, showing his significance for Greece, not only on a
diplomatic level but also as a poet, winning the Nobel Prize. An interesting
fact for us here in London is that Seferis was Consul General and later
Ambassador of Greece in London. The talk was also accompanied by a beautiful Hadjidakis
musical background, and a power point presentation.
Interestingly enough, the
artistic aspect of the event was also enriched by two great paintings of George
Seferis, painted by Mr Alexis Kapraras, a Greek Cypriot artist based in London.
The President of the Community of St Panteleimon Dr Serafim Kyriakides thanked
the speaker by also giving him a painting for his office at the Consulate of
Greece here in London, one of Mr Kapraras’ works. The night finished with
refreshments prepared by the Ladies Auxiliary Committee, with Alexandra
Constantinou as President.
